Benchmark for Pre-Use Electrical Testing Using Portable Testers
Barry D.E.W. insulating ropes are designed to stand out, offering the ability to be cleaned, maintained, and handled like hot sticks. These ropes can also be tested before use using portable hot stick testers, such as models available from A.B. Chance and Hastings.
Example of Benchmarking:
-
Rope:
NF3400, ½-inch diameter Barry D.E.W. insulating rescue rope (new rope stored in a warm, dry environment). -
Test Equipment:
A.B. Chance Wet/Dry Hot Stick Tester (Model C 403-3178) set to the "Dry" setting. -
Conditioning:
Dry rope (note: never spray or immerse the rope prior to field use). -
Testing Procedure:
Test the entire rope section on all faces and document the values obtained.
Expected Results:
- A value of 0 to 5 µA is ideal for a new rope stored in a warm, dry environment.
- Ropes in service should be tested prior to use, with values falling within the same range (0 to 5 µA).
- If a value higher than 5 µA is recorded, the rope should be considered suspicious and further investigation is required. Do not use the rope—it may have been exposed to contaminants or water. It might need reconditioning in a heated, dry room before being placed back in service.
